PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. --Texans Robert Thompson and Bruce Smith got off to a fast start Wednesday (Jan. 19)and held on to win the 53rd annual PGA Senior-Junior Team Championship Presented by Premier Golf and United Rentals at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

A front-nine better ball score of seven-under par 29 led to a final round of 64 on the Ryder Course and a 33 under 255. Still, they only won by a shot as Dennis Winters of Bishopville, Md., and Rick Schuler of Chester, Va., were second at 63-256.

"We played better on the front nine than we had been," said Smith, 44, PGA director of instruction at Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas. "We only made two birdies on the front Sunday," enroute to a 63, "three Monday (a 65) and three Tuesday (another 63)."

Smith birdied the second and third holes, both birdied the fifth and seventh; Thompson the sixth, eighth and ninth. Thompson made their only birdie on the back nine, a 15 footer from the edge at the par-3 16th with Smith's tee shot just three feet from the cup.

They did not make a bogey in 72 holes. "That was huge," Smith said, especially since Winters and Schuller had one, when both three-putted the par-4 15th hole on Tuesday. "It's a thrill to win a national championship for the first time," Smith added.

Thompson, 54, PGA teaching professional at Whispering Pines Country Club in Huntsville, won the Senior PGA Professional Championship in October. He will be conditionally exempt on the Champions Tour this year. He was fully exempt in 2009.

Reports: Ravens To Hire WRs Coach Bobby Engram

Bobby Engram is a former NFL receiver who has coached in the pros and college.



The Ravens are reportedly set to complete their offensive coaching staff by hiring Bobby Engram as their wide receivers coach, according to coachingsearch.com.

Engram would replace Jim Hostler, who after six years in Baltimore left to join the Buffalo Bills once he was not hired as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator.

Engram was an NFL receiver for 14 seasons, splitting his career between the Chicago Bears, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs.

He finished his pro career with 650 receptions for 7,751 yards and 35 touchdowns, including six catches for 70 yards in Super Bowl XL for the Seahawks in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Before that, Engram was arguably the greatest receiver in Penn State history. He won the first-ever Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver, and is still the Nittany Lions’ all-time leader in yards (3,026) and touchdowns (31).

After retiring in 2009, Engram quickly launched himself into coaching.

He was an offensive assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 2011, then the wide receivers coach at the University of Pittsburgh in 2012 and 2013.

Head Coach John Harbaugh dipped into the college ranks to hire Running Backs Coach Thomas Hammock from Wisconsin. Now he has reportedly done it again to grab Engram.

Engram would be in charge of developing wide receivers Torrey Smith, Marlon Brown and more. He could also potentially work with a high draft pick, as the Ravens have said they want to add a reliable pass catcher to their corps this offseason.

　国内女子ツアー「伊藤園レディスゴルフトーナメント」が、千葉県にあるグレートアイランド倶楽部を舞台に12日(金)から開幕する。残り3試合となった国内女子ツアーは現在、アン・ソンジュ(韓国)が賞金ランキングで首位を独走し、2位の横峯さくらに約3,300万円差をつけている。今大会でもしアンが優勝した場合、賞金女王がほぼ確定してしまうため、横峯がどこまで踏ん張れるかが最大の焦点だ。

　プロアマが行われたこの日、アンは入念にコースをチェック。「フェアウェイをキープするのが一番大事」とコースの印象を語り「グリーンは大きいので、ポジションを大事にしていきたいと思います」とコースマネージメントを立てた。目の前に賞金女王が近づいてきたが「今週は自分のゴルフを一生懸命やりたい。優勝を考えると硬くなるので、10位以内に入ること、それを目標にやっていきたいと思います」とタイトルのことは考えずに平常心で臨むつもりだ。

　一方の横峯は「ゴルフは何が起こるかわからないので。少しでも差を縮められるように頑張ります」とコメント。「マスターズGCレディース」で今季2勝目を挙げたあとは体調不良などもあり首位のアンとの差を縮めることができなかったが、逆転に対するモチベーションは「維持できています」と意欲を見せる。また「目標は高くじゃないけど最後まで自分のベストをつくしたいです」と最後まであきらめず戦い続ける姿勢だ。明日はいきなりアンと同組で直接対決するが「初日なので普段どおりに」と気負いする様子もない。2年連続女王の座をつかむため、この大一番で力を発揮したい。

　国内男子ツアー「つるやオープンゴルフトーナメント」は3日目の競技を終了。この日、63ストロークと爆発的なスコアを叩き出したハン・リー(米国)が、トータル14アンダーで単独首位に浮上。3打差の2位には藤田寛之がつけた。

遼、22位タイ浮上も「スッキリしないラウンド」

　藤田は「6番まではポンポンとバーディを獲れた」と3番、6番パー5でスコアを伸ばす快調な滑り出し。しかし、7番でボギーを叩くと後半11番でもボギーが先行。「それからチャンスで入らなくてボギーが先に来てしまい残念でした。14番までは苦しい展開でしたね」と12番ではバーディを奪取するも、続く13番で落としてしまう出入りの激しいゴルフに。しかし、終盤の16番パー5でイーグル、最終18番はバーディで締めてスコアを3つ伸ばしトータル11アンダーでホールアウトした。

　明日は悪天候が予報されているため「そのことも頭に入れていた、みんなのスコアを見ててもわかりますね」ともう少しスコアを伸ばしたかったところ。「試合が行われなければ優勝はないのでプレーはしたいし、今日みたいなゴルフがしたい。雨だとハン・リーみたいに飛ばす選手が有利だと思うけど、山の原はそれだけではないので頑張ります」。藤田は2日目、雨の中スコアを伸ばし上位に浮上。中止にさえならなければ、磨きぬかれた熟練の技と粘りのゴルフで今季初優勝をつかみにいく。

　なお、藤田と同じく芹澤信雄を師と仰ぐ“チーム芹澤”の上井邦浩がトータル9アンダー9位、河瀬賢史がトータル8アンダーで10位と健闘中。「若い2人が勢いがあるから刺激になります。引っ張っていかないといけないし、負けたくない気持ちもあります」兄弟子の威厳を若手に見せつけるためにも明日の勝負は負けられない。

　国内男子ツアー「つるやオープンゴルフトーナメント」の最終日。22位タイでスタートした石川遼は、前半はチャンスにつけながら思うようにパットが決まらない苦しい展開。我慢を重ね、8番までスコアカード通りの数字を並べると9番でようやく最初のバーディ奪取に成功。トータル6アンダー20位タイで後半のプレーに入った。

　現在首位はトータル12アンダーのハン・リー(米国)。1打差の2位タイには金庚泰(キム・キョンテ)(韓国)と藤田寛之がつけている。

　国内男子ツアー「つるやオープンゴルフトーナメント」の3日目。08年の初出場以来、5度目の出場で初めて今大会の予選を突破した池田勇太が11位タイに浮上した。

遼、22位タイ浮上も「スッキリしないラウンド」

　INコースからスタートした池田は前半で2つスコアを伸ばすと、後半は1番から3連続バーディを奪取。この日は5バーディ・ノーボギーとスコアを5つ伸ばし41位タイから一気に11位まで順位を上げた。

　「決勝ラウンドに進めばこっちのもんです」と苦手としていたコースでの好スコアを喜んだ池田。先週の開幕戦では最終日に66ストロークをマークし10位タイでフィニッシュ。「今日はノーボギーだし、先週の最終日とか4日間そろうのも近いと思う」と手ごたえをつかんだ。「明日は自分がやれるだけをやる。良い位置にこれたのだから、明日は上に向かっていくだけ」。昨シーズン後半から元気がなかった若大将がようやく調子を上げてきた。
